The young knight's smile falters, and his gaze drops to the half-eaten apple in his hands.

"I no more than any other man can guess the will of our Lord. What I have are those spare visions He continues to grant me. Perhaps I would not be blamed were I to go home... but it is not God I question in this. Home and rest are temptations I dream about often. If I ride home to my kinsmen and court now... I know not if I would later find the will to leave again." He looks the other man over with a gaze that is first apologetic, but then slowly filling with a creeping sense of appreciation of Merek's dedication to the King. If only their interests were not as opposed as they are, and he did not have to deny him the chance to do his duty at every turn. In a twinge of sympathy, he lays the hand that had previously rested on Merek's shoulder like a gentle blessing on the other man's bowed head. "If I could grant you this I would, but I must say thee 'fie' again."

Taking back his hand, he draws a knee up to his chest, other leg stretching out to get comfortable; In a way, it is too a subtly physical refusal to leave, to go with his verbal one.
